The telephone is an everyday object that connects people. Regrettably the communication reduces the spectrum of perception to the hearing sense. This results in a neglect of emotions.

In my project I propose to add the haptic sense to expand this spectrum. My augmented telephone connects two people, spatially separated, on different levels through
special modules.

One module transmits and measures the pulse, resulting in a pulsating receiver. Another module transmits the body heat to heat up the receiver. A third measures the amount of transpiration and lets the receiver sweat. The augmentations creates an extra emotional communication layer.

Concept

The course NEARNESS was about the relation between humans and machines. My concern was a relationship between two humans over a machine. Therefore I decided to use a telephone because it easily connects people over distance. My purpose was to reduce the distance between people by creating an emotional nearness.

My emotional augmented telephone connects two people, spatially separated, on different levels through special modules which creates an extra emotional communication layer.

The emotional layer is created by a heat and a pulse module, also a transpiration module.

Functions

The tele*emo*fon has three organic functions; heat, pulse and transpiration. These functions creates an extra emotional communication layer between two people.

The functions can be chosen by pressing the particular button on the numpad.

 

Pulse pulse

The little measure points at the bottom border side of the receiver (where you usally place your fingers) ascertain your pulse. Incoming pulse is simulated by a cavernous body inside the receiver.

 

Body heat heat

A big measure point at the top of the receiver (where you usally place your palm of one's hands) ascertain the body heat. A heating coil inside the reveiver heats it up to the amount of the incoming body heat.

 

sweat*fon

The third module lets the receiver sweat over a membrane. The fluid flows through the cable to your receiver. The amount of fluid can be regulated by a handwheel at the bottom of the tele*emo*fon body.
